AI phone ordering for US restaurants

AI phone ordering, for restaurants that live on takeout

Zogu answers your phone, takes pickup orders from your POS menu, reads each order back once and sends it in when the caller says yes. It takes reservations too. No transfers, no card numbers.

It's still in testing: as of November 5, 2026, no restaurant uses it yet.

Each demo call is limited to 25 turns, 15 minutes and 300 characters a turn, and there's a daily cap, so the demo can be busy. Please don't type real names, addresses, phone numbers or card details. Speech-to-text is done by your browser, not by Zogu: Chrome sends the audio to Google and Safari to Apple to turn it into text. How the demo handles what you type or say.

What happens on a call

A pickup call, start to finish:

  • Zogu answers with your restaurant's name and says it's the automated ordering assistant. A regular is greeted by first name.
  • The caller orders the way people actually talk: "a twelve-inch pepperoni, um, and garlic knots" finds the 12" on your menu. Required choices, like crust, come one question at a time.
  • "Actually, make that two" or "take off the knots" changes the order. A "yeah" while Zogu talks doesn't stop it.
  • When the caller's done, Zogu can make up to two add-on offers. A no ends it.
  • Then one read-back and "Shall I place the order?" Without a clear yes, nothing is sent.
  • Once your POS has the order, Zogu gives the total, says goodbye and hangs up.

Lines from our test calls

The caller's words are real, from calls our team made. Zogu's lines are what it says today.

Caller: "Is there cheese on the mega burger?"

Zogu: "Sorry, I don't have the ingredients for the Mega Burger. Would you like to order one?"

Caller, after three doner kebabs were listed: "With cheese."

Zogu: "Sorry, the Doner Kebabs don't come with a cheese option. Which would you like?"

On the calls themselves, Zogu got both wrong (it offered the cheesecake for the second). Both are fixed. Try it in the web demo, with a made-up US pizzeria that quotes dollars.

Your restaurant needs a POS we work with

Zogu works with Toast, Square, Clover, Oracle MICROS RES 3700 and Foodhub (the list), and nothing else. It reads your menu from your POS and sends every order back into it.

  • It sells only what can be ordered right now, so if you 86 the wings and hide them in your POS, the next caller isn't offered wings.
  • Zogu's own code adds up the order from your POS prices. The language model never sets a price.
  • Orders arrive marked to be paid at pickup or on delivery. Zogu doesn't wait for your accept or reject.

More on how Zogu works from your live POS menu, and on winning back direct phone orders from the delivery apps.

Customers pay at pickup or at the door

Zogu never asks for card details. Every total it reads out ends "before tax", because Zogu doesn't add sales tax. Card payment by texted link is built but switched off.

It only speaks English

Zogu understands and speaks English only. A caller who starts in Spanish gets an apology in English and can't order. If a lot of your phone orders come in Spanish, Zogu isn't a fit today.

Recording laws and what we keep

Zogu doesn't record audio. It keeps a written transcript of each call: what was said, reply times, the order as sent and how the call ended. The greeting says it's the automated ordering assistant, but not that the call is transcribed.

Some states, California and Florida among them, need everyone's consent to record a call. Whether a transcript counts, and whether the greeting is enough, is a question for your lawyer before you switch Zogu on. See AI disclosure and call transcripts.

What it won't do

  • No transfers or promised call-backs, enforced in code (the details).
  • No orders for later or dine-in.
  • No texts of any kind while pay by link is off.
  • No POS promotions, and at most 20 of one item.

The rest is on the full list of what Zogu doesn't do.

Where Zogu is today

No restaurant uses Zogu yet. On our test calls it started speaking a median of 1.3 seconds after the caller stopped (the full figures). Of 20 test calls by November 5, 7 ended in an order, and the test system shows all 7 accepted or completed.

Its wording is UK-first, and delivery areas use UK postcodes, so a ZIP code won't match. Plan on pickup only for now.

See US restaurants for pizzerias, wings, Chinese takeout, delis and BBQ, and the US FAQ for more. UK restaurants should read the UK site.

Questions and answers

Can I keep my current phone number?

The plan is to forward your line to Zogu's number, but we haven't done that with a real restaurant yet.

What happens if we reject an order?

The call is already over, and Zogu doesn't contact the customer. Someone at the restaurant needs to let them know.

What if a caller hangs up halfway through?

Before the order is placed, nothing is sent. During sending or over the goodbye, the order still goes through, once.
