Chinese takeout phone orders that follow lunch hours

Zogu sells lunch specials only during their hours in your POS, asks pint or quart as a size, and takes combination plates one choice at a time. Ordering by number doesn't work yet, and no Chinese menu has been run through it.

Lunch specials follow the hours in your POS

The most specific hours win: dish, then menu, then pickup and delivery, then store.

  • Outside its hours, a lunch special isn't listed, and asking for it gets "isn't available right now." We tested this on a pizza menu.
  • Hours are checked when the call starts, so a 2:58 p.m. call can still order a special that ends at 3.
  • Special days and paused orders in your POS are followed too.
  • No orders for later. Before you open, callers hear when you open.

Pint and quart sizes

With a required Size choice, the agent asks "For the Wonton Soup, which size would you like? We have Pint or Quart." Each size keeps its POS price, and Zogu's code does the totals.

Watch the names: "Pt." and "Qt." aren't respelled, and "Wonton Soup (Pt.)" and "Wonton Soup (Qt.)" both come out as "Wonton Soup." Use a size choice or write the size out.

Combination plates, one question at a time

  • Only required choices are asked, one at a time. Extras are up to the caller.
  • With more than four options it names four: "We have twelve, including ..."
  • Several dishes in one breath are taken together.
  • "No onions" and "no MSG" go to the kitchen as notes. "Extra spicy" works only if it's an option.

More on how the agent matches what callers actually say.

Ordering by number doesn't work yet

"Number 23 and a quart of wonton" won't work. The agent looks dishes up by name, so a number matches nothing and the caller has to name the dish. Each miss goes on our review list.

Regulars can say "the usual" instead. Their last Zogu order comes back, checked against what's available right now.

What we'd check on your menu first

  • Pronunciation. The built-in respellings have nothing Chinese yet, so we'd listen to General Tso's, lo mein, moo shu and char siu.
  • Spellings. Szechuan, Sichuan and Schezwan; kung pao and kung pow.
  • Phrases. The console's "Try it" box shows which dish "beef and broccoli" picks, lunch or dinner.
  • Misses. A phrase the agent can't match on a real call goes on the review list, and a fix works from the next call.

What it doesn't do yet

  • English only. Cantonese or Mandarin callers get an apology in English.
  • Totals are "before tax."
  • Delivery doesn't take ZIP codes, so it's pickup only for now.
  • No POS promotions, though a family dinner set up as a menu item works.
  • No card details by phone, no transfers, no callbacks.

As of November 5, 2026, it has only run on our integration platform's test system. See what Zogu doesn't do and the Zogu page for US restaurants.

Questions and answers

Can I keep my restaurant's existing phone number?

Not tested yet. The plan is to forward your line to the agent's own number, but we haven't tried that with a real restaurant.

Is there a limit on big office orders?

Yes, 20 of any one item. So 20 egg rolls is fine and 30 isn't.

Does it work if my menu isn't in a POS?

No. Zogu's menu, prices and hours all come from your POS, through our POS integration platform.
